Hmm..funny, I have 75 of these 'so-called' adults sitting in front of me everyday. I took them through a college and careers unit earlier this semester to stress the imporatance of the timelines and deadlines that they are on as seniors..do you think it sank in? No, probably 33% of them started the process and the rest are like your son, not applied. Do you know if college is the route for your son?
Your comments sound like an exasperated mother! I am watching my sister go through this with my niece, however she can't say too much as the apple is not falling far from the tree!!
My guess is that it has mostly to do with that he is a boy and it doesn't seem to important to him right now, what do you think? :)
Leah, We have asked if he really wants to go the college route and he says yes. And, to be fair, he has sent off 2 applications, but that is because they accepted common apps and no essay :)
Amy, I believe there is definately something about boys and lack of applying themselves. He has a good friend who has better grades, Eagle Scout etc. and has also applied to 2 colleges. Thought about a third, but doesn't want to "bother" with the process of applying. (big sigh)
You can lead a horse to water..... I know I had to have the pressure of deadlines to get stuff done. Maybe reward him with dinner at his favorite place or some kind of favorite treat just like a little puppy.
This is one time where I feel like I can not comment. I am too far from your sons age to remember all of the application frustration but then I do not have kids of my own so I can not fully understand your frustration. I do recall hating the essay process and remembering dreading applications that required them. Good Luck
I am so glad to hear I am not alone! and we haven't even gotten to college applications, just trying to get him to do his homework is enough to make me pull my hair out!!

ReplyDeleteCindy,
ReplyDeleteLike most boys, he is motivated by food! I'll have to see if my little puppy takes the bait...if not it's off to the dog house for him!
